RE: Makes as much sense as looking for money in a pipeline (nt)

I don't care how loony this bastard is. I want to be his roommate.

I did not read the full title when I saw this article.

Honestly, it reads a lot like balancing announcements from a video game.

You did not heed our warnings.

So I've been obsessed with Goths lately.

I'm not sure when this obsession started. I briefly dallied with it back in high school like everybody else (so don't you dare judge me), only to realize after about a week that the music sucks and you look like a tool*. Since then, I really haven't given it much thought. Recently, though, it's come back at me like a goddamned cancer. No, I don't want to dress like a corpse trying to get laid, but the idea of goth is very fascinating, if not disturbing.

Again, I'm not sure what triggered this. It could be any number of things, actually. Time Burton's latest nightmare of a Hot Topic flick has stirred uncomfortable memories of the 90's. Also, I recently started playing Brutal Legend, and I got to the level where Ophelia goes all Bauhaus on you and starts summoning Robert Smith clones to fight for her. Then there's the fact I recently heard Type-O Negative on the local metal station last night**. I also have numerous students who dress in the "goth" (read: emo/Juggalo/Hot Topic) style, despite most of them being well into their 20's and, in one case, 30's. Clearly, the universe is conspiring to make me think about chicks in too much mascara and lace.

So what is it about goths that is so fascinating? I am repelled by them, like an arachnophobe by spiders, but also intrigued by them, like an ichthyologist who likes watching fish but can't stand seafood. I honestly don't know what it is, since the few I've talked to (both recently and in the past) are generally utter twats.

Any insight?

* I, of course, solved this by immediately becoming a grungy metalhead who wore flannel and army boots. Somehow, it was an improvement.
** No, I have no idea why they were playing it, either. Type-O Negative is sucky music.
