Should I Buy TF2?

Or, more to the point, if I buy TF2, will it devour my life and torpedo my productivity? I try to avoid buying games that reward me for spending crazy amounts of time on them (i.e. RPGs and games with lots of "unlockables"). I used to love Team Fortress Classic back in the day, and I don't remember it fitting into this category, but from what I gather, TF2 does have some kind of item/weapon acquisition component.

Bottom line: after the initial Shiny New Toy Phase wears off, is TF2 the kind of game that's easy to play for an hour or so and then call it quits?
