What the hell is the point of google voice

I just got an invite yesterday, and after a few hours of fiddling around with it realized that any outbound calls you route through GV show up in the recipient's caller ID as the phone number of the device you called with.

So in other words, no one has any incentive to use your GV number since they always see your device-specific number, which means that all of the clever bells and whistles of GV (call routing, transcription, recording ETC.) are entirely useless since everyone will always bypass them.

What, I ask, is the point
