Earthquakes are actually pretty common in the Midwest.

Map comparing the 1895 New Madrid quake and the 1994 Northridge quake (yellow areas are where the quakes were felt, and red areas are where damage and destruction occured).

This area was hit by a series of quakes ranging just shy of the 8.0 mark between 1811 and 1812. Some were strong enough to cause the Mississippi River to reverse its flow and even shift course in many places.
