I don't think you know what a slippery slope is joffe b 04/05/08, 15:21 | 0 | And a vagina with legs is just bananas.
besides reading about it one time on Wikipedia.
I mean, it fits with Christianity's habit of co-opting the fun stuff from everybody else's religion, and I certainly want it to be true, but I want to have some completely ironclad rationale for referring to it as Fishy Vagina from now on.
There's no support for it, it's stupid as all hell.
Seriously, it's a slippery slope: First you start with this and next thing you know, you'll end up one of those whiny cunts who says things like "magic book" and "magic man in the sky" without the slightest awareness that he's drowning in douche.
Pointing out that "fish" symbols nearly identical to the Jesus Fish have been used by everyone isn't douchery, its basic art history. Ever hear of Pisces Vesica? Ancient math nerds LOVED that shit. It was a different age, when knowing math was enough to get you laid and appointed high priest. The Pisces Vesica has been used to represent a vagina in many cultures, just take a look at ancient Sheela na gigs (but not while at work). Other cultures used it as a symbol for duality or synthesis such as the resulting of overlapping the sun and the moon. The early Christians were undoubtedly more interested in its geometrical origins than the vaginal ones. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the vagina thing didn't even enter their minds until much later (Its not coincidence that Renassaince art is full of examples of Jesus placed inside Pisces Vesica borders, at a time when mathematic and pagan studies were becoming popular again). But that doesn't change the fact that the symbol was co-opted.
Yeah, you're going to find a lot of quasi-mystical nuttery associated anything that might link Christianity to vaginas. That doesn't change the underlying truth which is A. The Jesus fish is directly derived from the Pisces Vesica and B. Some ancient, non-Christian people wanted to have sex with it. Just ignore the "pagans" and look at the art. | | Previous - Next | Reply - Reply With Quote | | | | |
