GWB: America Is White People, Can You Darkies Leave Already?

While I originally only thought it was slightly amusing that all of the pictures in the compassion section on George W Bush's election website show African-Americans, maybe there is more. First by having the page only show non-whites, mainly African-Americans the thought could be, GWB doesn't think white's need his compassion, only those poor colored folk. Okay there is one picture of him shaking hands with a white kid, but the white kid is framed by a darker skinned child.

Now before you think I am going crazy with the skin color here, hang on. The following is a quote from Bush last Friday as he answered a question about Canada's changing role in Iraq by stating,

"There's a lot of people in the world who don't believe that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours can be free and self-govern. I reject that. I reject that strongly. I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren't necessarily -- are a different color than white can self-govern."

What is being implied here? That this is not just a religious war as some Christian conservatives like to frame it, but the war on terrorism is a race war? Non-white = terrorists, whites = good guys? And what does this say about America? That non-whites are not considered real Americans? That they are only able to handle democracy because the white power structure handles all that messy freedom for them?

The press can keep saying Bush's off the cuff gaffs as just slips of the tongue. But doesn't there come a time when we ask our president to say what he means and mean what he says? Or maybe Bush just did, and everyone is too scared to call him on it?
