In the span of a few weeks, hip-hop star Wyclef Jean turned the world's attention to a little-known political race in a small, impoverished Caribbean country - with little campaigning, no TV ads and zero debates.

Within a few seconds at a hastily called news conference Friday night, Jean was barred from running for president in Haiti, presumably because he didn't meet the residency requirements.

Laura Schlessinger, the radio talk- show host who apologized last week for repeatedly using a racial slur on the air, said she will end the program when her contract expires at the end of this year.

“I’ve made the decision not to do radio anymore,” Schlessinger, known as “Dr. Laura,” said yesterday on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” “It’s time to move on to other venues where I could say my piece and not have to live in fear anymore that sponsors and their families are going to be upset.”

In one week after launching its appeal for the Haiti earthquake back in January, the Humanitarian Coalition in Canada raised $3.5 million dollars.

Now, a week after a similar campaign for the devastating floods in Pakistan, the coalition has received only $200,000 dollars in public donations.
